root canals

- Root canal therapy is a procedure to clean out the root of the tooth that is badly decayed or infected. It is indicated when a large cavity extends to the center of the tooth and/or if there is an infection or trauma involving the nerve.
- How do you know if you need a root canal?
A clinical examination involving patient’s history, radiographs, percussion/palpation and sensitivity tests is considered to properly diagnose if root canal therapy will be needed.
- Common signs and symptoms that may indicate a need for a root canal are:
- Visible intraoral abscess – painful raised bump in your gums
- Prolonged tooth sensitivity to hot/cold that worsened over time
- Severe toothache upon chewing
- Gingival swelling and tenderness
- Root canals are usually painless and are necessary to eliminate toothache discomfort.
