dental cleanings

  • A prophylactic cleaning is recommended every 6 months to maintain the health of the teeth and gums for an individual with healthy gums.
  • If gum disease is present, more thorough and frequent cleanings will be required to maintain optimal oral health. Many patients know of this as a deep cleaning.
  • There are two types of gum disease.
    • Gingivitis is the start of gum disease and patients experience bleeding, red, swollen gums. Patients may also experience bad breath, receding gums, and sensitive teeth.
    • Periodontitis is a more chronic and severe form of gum disease. In this stage, chronic inflammation causes bone loss around the teeth. Without treatment tooth loss may occur.
  • How do I know if I have gum disease?
      • X-rays will be taken and a hygienist/dentist will complete a thorough examination to evaluate the condition of your gums.
